WHAT IS FOREST SCHOOL?

Forest & Nature Schools, sometimes just called Forest Schools, are nature-based programs that support play, exploration, discovery and learning through regular and repeated sessions in natural settings, in all seasons.  Forest school programs foster children’s development through hands-on experiences to develop confidence, self-awareness, social relationships, communication skills, and the ability to navigate risk in a safe environment. Programs have a positive effect on children’s mental health, wellbeing and encourages a healthy active lifestyle. Rooted in regular visits to learn in the same natural setting children build an ongoing relationship to the land, to themselves, and to others.  While these programs originally focused on forests, this approach has grown to incorporate natural areas, farms and even urban park settings.
